- Baixa or Chiado can make a useful base for this route, but check the slopes and actual distance to transport before choosing accommodation.
- Use transport between central Lisbon and Belém and for tiring uphill sections. Check current services and fares rather than relying on a particular tram always being convenient.
- The budget snapshot includes lodging and is only an illustrative allowance. A Sintra excursion adds transport and ticket costs; compare those with your accommodation quote before committing.
What to check before booking
- Check Jerónimos opening days and admission on the monument's official site. Its normal Monday closure affects the order of this itinerary.
- Check current Belém Tower access before planning an interior visit. The waterfront route still works with an exterior-only stop.
- Pena Palace visits use a booked admission time. Allow separate time for the train, onward transport and reaching the palace entrance; check current instructions with the operator.
Planning tips
- Keep Alfama's hill routes together and build in breaks. A map that looks short can still involve a steep climb.
- Move the Belém monument day if it falls on Monday, when Jerónimos normally closes. Check the current official schedule before booking.
- Choose Sintra only if you have a full day available. It is a replacement for the final city day, not a quick extra stop before a flight.

Day 1
Baixa, Chiado and your bearings
Praça do Comércio → Baixa → Rossio → Chiado
Suggested pace: A flexible arrival day; allow breaks between the flat center and the climb
- Morning or arrival: start at Praça do Comércio and follow the streets through Baixa toward Rossio.
- Afternoon: continue to Chiado for lunch and a café stop. Use transport for the uphill section if walking is tiring.
- Evening: have dinner around Chiado or Bairro Alto, keeping your route back to the accommodation simple.
You can shorten this to Baixa and dinner if you arrive late. The remaining stops fit into Day 4's city option.
Day 2
Alfama and a hilltop viewpoint
São Jorge Castle area → Alfama lanes → Santa Luzia viewpoint
Suggested pace: Most of a day at a slower pace, with lunch and rest stops
- Morning: reach the castle area, with an interior visit only if you want to buy a ticket. Otherwise start with the surrounding streets.
- Afternoon: make your way through Alfama with a lunch break; choose a small loop instead of climbing to every viewpoint.
- Evening: return to Santa Luzia or another nearby viewpoint, or book a fado evening if it matches your interests.
The suggested order starts higher and works toward lower streets, but still involves slopes and uneven paving. Check a step-free route separately if needed.
Day 3
Belém monuments and the waterfront
Jerónimos Monastery → Belém gardens → riverside walk
Suggested pace: A full day with one main interior visit and flexible waterfront time
- Morning: travel to Belém and visit Jerónimos if your chosen date and ticket allow it. Keep the visit separate from the journey from central Lisbon.
- Afternoon: have lunch or a pastry stop, then walk in the gardens and along the waterfront.
- Later: choose a museum or a Belém Tower exterior stop. Treat tower entry as optional until you have checked current access and availability.
Jerónimos normally closes on Mondays. Swap the whole Belém day rather than arriving with a fixed plan for a closed monument.
Day 4
Choose Sintra or a slower Lisbon day
Option A: Sintra and one main monument · Option B: Chiado and the riverside
Suggested pace: A full day for Sintra, or a flexible city day for departure
- Sintra option: check the train service and choose one main monument. If visiting Pena Palace, reserve its admission time and allow for onward transport from the station.
- City option: revisit Chiado, take a longer lunch and add a riverside walk or one museum you missed.
- If departing today: choose the city option, with a separate block for luggage and your airport transfer.
For a Sintra day, the palace admission time is not your arrival time at Sintra station. Leave transfer and access time between them.
Adjust the plan to your kind of trip
Less climbing
Spend more time in Baixa and Belém, use transport up to a selected viewpoint, and skip the longer Alfama loop. Uneven paving can still affect shorter routes.
Rainy day
Use a museum or monastery visit when it is open, and move the viewpoint walk to a drier window. Avoid forcing a wet hill route just to preserve the original order.
Early departure
Keep Day 4 in central Lisbon. Sintra belongs on a day with enough room for transfers and the full return journey.

Is 4 days enough for Lisbon and Sintra?
Four days can cover three Lisbon area-based days and one Sintra day if you have four full days. If arrival or departure takes a large part of a day, keep the final day in Lisbon or remove an attraction rather than rushing both.
What changes if my Belém day is a Monday?
Jerónimos Monastery normally closes on Mondays. Swap the Belém day with another day and check the monument's official schedule for holiday exceptions and access updates.
Should I visit several Sintra palaces in one day?
For this slower first-visit plan, choose one main monument and leave room for transfers and lunch. A longer list of palaces needs a different schedule and additional booking checks.
Can I make this Lisbon itinerary with fewer hills?
Keep the flat Baixa and riverside sections, reach the higher neighborhoods by transport, and shorten the Alfama walking loop. Check access information for individual venues; this guide is not a step-free route.
